Thakkali Sadam (Tomato Rice)

A spicy dish from the South of India, made from rice and tomatos

Type: Vegetarian Serving: 6 Cooking Time: 20 minutes


  • Rice, picked, washed and soaked 2 cups
  • Pudina (Mint leaves), chopped 2 tbsp
  • Hara dhania (Coriander leaves), chopped 2 tbsp
  • Ghee (Clarified Butter) cup
  • Dal chini (Cinnamon), broken tsp
  • Laung (Cloves) 4
  • Chhoti elaichi (Green Cardamom) 2
  • Onion, grated cup
  • Ginger-garlic paste                2 tsp
  • Tomato puree 1 cup
  • Green chillies, slit 4
  • Salt 2 tsp or to taste
  • Hara Dhania (Coriander leaves) for garnish


  • Heat the ghee and add the dal chini, laung and elaichi.
  • Add the onions and ginger garlic paste and saute till onions are a light brown.

  • Add the tomato puree and saute till fat separates.

  • Add the green chillies and salt, turn around a few times.

  • Add the rice, pudina and dhania and mix well. Add 3 cups water and bring to a boil.

  • Lower the heat, cover and cook till all the liquid is absorbed.

  • Serve hot garnished with the hara dhania.
